Class: The Merchant & Mills Harlene Overalls, starts Wednesday August 12, 5:30-8:30PM (4 sessions)
Sew the Harlene Overalls from Merchant & Mills—a modern wardrobe staple featuring thoughtful construction details, practical pockets, and a relaxed fit that's perfect for everyday wear. Whether you're looking for a classic workwear-inspired overall or something with a more contemporary silhouette, this class will give you the skills to confidently build a beautifully finished garment.
In addition to constructing the overalls, you'll learn how to customize the fit by modifying the leg shape. Evan will demonstrate how to alter the original slightly tapered leg into either a straight leg or a barrel leg, giving you the confidence to personalize future pant and overall patterns as well.
Skill Level: Advancing beginner or intermediate sewists. Previous experience sewing a pair of pants is highly recommended, as a basic understanding of garment construction will make the process much more enjoyable. If you're unsure whether this class is the right fit for your skill level, please don't hesitate to reach out before registering.
Class Schedule & Homework:
- This is a four-week class, meeting one Wednesday evening (5:30-8:30PM) per week (Wednesdays August 12, 19, 26, & September 2)
-
Because of the many details involved in this project, the class is spread over four weeks. We'll break the construction into manageable sections each session, but students should expect some homework between classes. While many students may finish individual steps during class time, any unfinished work should be completed before the following week's session so everyone can stay on track.
What You'll Learn:
- Overall construction techniques for a professional finish
- How to install overall hardware, including dungaree clips and tack buttons
- How to construct functional pockets and durable workwear details
- Techniques for achieving clean, accurate topstitching
- How to modify the pattern to create a straight leg or barrel leg silhouette
- Construction skills that can be applied to future pants and overall projects
Class Fee: The cost of this class is $335 which includes the printed pattern + PDF files for future use, overall hardware including dungaree clips and tack buttons, and use of classroom tools.
Sizing & Fabric Requirements: See the charts in photos for detailed sizing, finished garment, and fabric requirements charts. If you're between sizes, get enough fabric to make the larger size and Evan can help you decide which size to make during the first class.
What to Bring:
- Main fabric (yardage requirements in photos)
- 1/2 yard medium weight cotton fabric for pocket lining
- Thread
- Sewing machine with basic accessories (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin, etc.)
- We recommend that you bring your own fabric scissors
- Any other sewing tools you like to use at home!
Cancellation Policy: We require a minimum of 4 students to hold the class (if we're not able to run this class you'll be refunded). If you need to cancel within 1 week of the class, you will receive store credit.
