The Worker Trouser by Modern Sewing Company is designed for durability, comfort, and timeless style. Featuring separate pattern drafts for male and female makers, these trousers are made to last using high-end finishing techniques. In this four-week class, you’ll learn how to construct a well-fitting, long-lasting pair of trousers while gaining confidence in sewing structured garments.

This class is open to all genders, and we encourage male students to join!

What You'll Learn:

  • Installing a zipper fly for a professional finish
  • Proper construction techniques for durable, long-lasting trousers
  • How to sew pockets, waistbands, and hems
  • Tips for sewing heavier fabrics like canvas and denim
  • Best practices for achieving a great fit

Skill Level:

This class is perfect for very confident beginners who are comfortable using their sewing machines. You don’t need prior garment-making experience, but you should have completed a few sewing projects (like tote bags or small accessories) and feel confident sewing straight seams, back-tacking, and following seam allowances. This should not be your first sewing project.

Not sure if this class is right for you? While we encourage confident beginners to sign up, please contact the shop if you're worried this class may be beyond your current skill level—we’re happy to help you decide!

Class Schedule & Homework:

  • This is a four-week class, meeting one Tuesday evening (5:30-8:30PM) per week (Tuesdays April 15, 22, 29, May 6)
  • Some weeks may require homework to ensure you stay on track. Students are responsible for completing any unfinished work before the next class session.

What's Included:

  • Printed pattern + PDF files for future use
  • A metal zipper and one button for your zipper fly
  • High-quality fusible interfacing
  • Two jeans sewing machine needles

The cost of instruction for this class is $290 and the kit fee (required) is $35, for a total class fee of $325.

What to Bring:

  • Prewashed medium-weight non-stretch denim or canvas (8-12 oz). No corduroy. See the sizing & yardage charts in photos to figure out how much fabric to get. If you're unsure about which size to make, take your best guess and get the fabric needed to make the largest size that you think might work for you. Evan can help you settle on a specific size before you cut out your pants during the first class!
  • 3/4 yard prewashed medium weight cotton for pockets and binding (you won't see this from the outside of the trousers)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing machine with basic accessories (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin, etc.)
  • We recommend that you bring your own fabric scissors
  • Any other sewing tools you like to use at home!

Fabric Recommendations: We strongly recommend that you come into the shop to pick out your fabric. Having the right weight of fabric will make sewing these pants go much more smoothly!

Outer Fabric: American Non-Stretch 10 oz. Denim, Deadstock Carhartt 10.5 oz. Canvas, Bull Denim 10 oz., Atelier Brunette Gabardine 364gsm/10.75oz

Pockets/Binding Fabric (won't be visible from outside): Medium weight cotton

If you're unsure about fabric choice, stop by the shop or email us for assistance!

The class requires a minimum of 4 students (if we're not able to run this class, you will be refunded). If you need to cancel within one week of the class, you will receive store credit.
