Why is this called Ticking when it’s not a stripe? Derived from the Dutch word ’tike’ referring to a tightly woven heavy-duty utility fabric designed to act as a barrier. Not necessarily the traditional ‘stripe' we all know it as today. Traditional upholsterers would personalise their ticking calico with their own makers mark, using natural dye and a hand carved wooden hand block.
