Sew your own Factotum Bag by Merchant & Mills—a neat, compact crossbody that’s small in size but surprisingly spacious. Designed to hold your daily essentials, this fully lined bag features two front pockets, a zippered closure, and a clean, functional design that works for everyday use.

Skill Level: Advancing Beginner or Intermediate. You need to have sewn a garment, quilt, bag or participated in a beginner sewing class prior to this class and feel comfortable using your machine. Please note that while the sewing techniques themselves are approachable, this project involves a thoughtful sequence of steps and construction order.

What You'll Learn:

  • Constructing and assembling a lined bag
  • Installing a zipper closure
  • Building and attaching pockets
  • Working through multi-step construction in the correct order
  • Sewing thicker layers with control and accuracy

Class Fee: The cost of this class is $175. The cost of instruction is $150 and the materials fee (required) is $25. We'll ring you up for the kit fee when you come in for class. :)

What's Included:

  • Zipper for the bag
  • Hardware for straps
  • Printed pattern & PDF files for future use
  • Use of classroom tools

What to Bring:

  • 1 yard of outer fabric
  • 1 yard of lining fabric
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine with basic accessories (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin, etc.). Bringing your own machine is encouraged, but studio machines are available—please reach out to info@lakemakerie.com to reserve one after you register for class. Machines are limited.

Fabric Recommendations:

  • Outer fabric: Denim, waxed canvas, sailcloth, or oilskin for a structured, durable finish

  • Lining fabric: Quilting cotton, cotton lawn, or cotton poplin

Choose a lining that is slightly lighter weight than your outer fabric, but not too lightweight, so it still provides structure. It’s also important to consider your sewing machine’s capabilities—at certain points, you may be sewing through 8+ layers of fabric, so selecting materials your machine can comfortably handle will help ensure success.

Cancellation Policy: We require a minimum of 4 students to hold the class (if we're not able to run this class you'll be refunded). If you need to cancel within 1 week of the class, you will receive store credit.
