The Crosstown Crescent Bag by GracoMakes is a comfy, practical, and fun-to-sew everyday bag with a distinctive crescent shape. Designed to be worn crossbody or over one shoulder, it features an adjustable strap, a fully lined interior, and an internal zip pocket for keeping your essentials organized.

Students can choose between two sizes: a compact Small or a roomier Medium. This makes the Crosstown Crescent a great opportunity to create a bag that fits your personal style and everyday needs while learning techniques you can carry into future bag-making projects.

Skill Level: Beginner/Confident Beginner. You need to have sewn a garment, quilt, bag or participated in a beginner sewing class prior to this class and feel comfortable using your machine.

What You'll Learn:

  • Constructing a crescent-shaped bag with curved seams
  • Sewing a fully lined bag with a clean, finished interior
  • Installing an internal zip pocket
  • Installing and adjusting a webbing strap with a tri-glide slide
  • Working with zippers and zipper tabs
  • Applying bias tape to finish internal seams
  • Working with different woven fabrics and understanding how fabric choice affects the finished bag
  • Techniques and construction methods that can be applied to future bag-making projects

Class Schedule: This is a two-week class, meeting Thursdays October 22 & 29 from 5:30-8:30PM.

What's Included: The GracoMakes Crosstown Crescent Bag printed PDF pattern and use of all classroom tools.

What to Bring: All fabric, zippers, sliders, and webbing can be found at the shop!

  • Main fabric (1/2 yard)*
  • Lining fabric (1/2 yard)*
  • Main zipper (Small size: 11" / Medium size: 14")
  • Interior pocket zipper (6" / 8")
  • Bias tape (52" / 63", you can purchase premade bias tape or make your own from lining fabric)
  • 48" of 1½" wide webbing
  • 1½" tri-glide slide adjuster
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine with basic accessories (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin, etc.)

*These amounts assume the fabric can be cut flat. If you're working with a directional print, stripes, corduroy, or another fabric that needs to be cut in a specific direction, you may want to purchase additional fabric.

Fabric Recommendations: For the outer fabric, you can use nearly any woven, non-stretch fabric. Bottomweight fabrics such as cotton twill, light canvas, light denim, and corduroy work beautifully. Quilting cotton can also be used for a softer, slouchier bag, or you can add interfacing if you'd prefer more structure. Quilted fabrics are another fun option and can add extra texture and personality to your bag. For the lining, lightweight, non-stretch woven fabrics such as quilting cotton are ideal.

Cancellation Policy: We require a minimum of 4 students to hold the class (if we're not able to run this class you'll be refunded). If you need to cancel within 1 week of the class, you will receive store credit.

The Crosstown Crescent is a great introduction to bag making, combining practical techniques like zipper installation, curved construction, lining, bias-bound seams, and adjustable straps in one useful project. By the end of the two-week class, you'll have a finished everyday bag and a collection of skills you can use on your next sewing project.
