Join Sarah in sewing the Orton Bag!

The Orton Bag by Merchant and Mills is a simple and classic oversized lined tote. Straight stitches straight stitches straight stitches! This simple but classic bag is a great way to learn and practice the basics of sewing! You’ll learn how to cut out fabric, sew pattern pieces, mind your seam allowances, sew self-handles, incorporate lining, and more! Once you've made this bag once, we hope you feel inspired to give the other itterations a try as well. The sky is the limit, and a good handmade bag is required for the journey.

A wonderful class for beginning sewists with some machine experience, or if you want to practice with Oilskin! We ask that you're able to sew a straight line; back tack; and thread and unjam your machine.

Cost of instruction for is $95. The material fee (required) is $15 and includes a printed Orton Bag PDF Pattern and use of studio tools, for a total class fee of $110.

Finished Bag Measurements: Length 22 in, Width 24.5 in.

What to bring:

- (1-1.5 yds) medium weight woven non-stretch canvas, oilskin or denim for bag and handles. If your fabric is less than 51 in/130cm wide, you'll need 1.5 yards. If it's 51 in or wider, you'll need just 1 yard.

- (3/4 yd) light-medium weight woven, canvas fabric for lining

- coordinating or contrasting thread

- Machine + accessories (foot pedal, power cord, bobbin, etc)

- Basic tools are provided in our studio for students. However, feel free to bring you own tools for your personal use. We ask that you bring your own fabric scissors to make cutting as easy as possible.

We recommend bringing your own machine so you can continue to learn the ins and outs of sewing on your home machine! If you need, we offer studio machines to use upon request.

We require a minimum of 4 students to hold the class. If you need to cancel later than 1 week before class is held, you will receive store credit.

Loved the class; love my new bag!

Sarah was so helpful: I learned new sewing tips, improvisations for the pattern based on Sarah’s experience, and things about my machine. I am now on my second bag and have purchased fabric for three more since my class one week ago. I enjoyed meeting my classmates and the fact that it was a small class (1:4) ratio was great. I look forward to my next class at Lakes Makerie!
