Gutermann Elastic (Shirring) Thread, 10m, white or black

$2.15

Wind on the  bobbin only snd sew multiple parallel rows to create stretchy shirring, (faux smocking) on lightweight fabrics such an lawn, voile, double gauze or chambray.

Tips for Lakes Makers:

  • Wind by bobbin firmly by hand (preferred method) or wind very slowly by machine, either way without stretching
  • Fill bobbin 2/3 full
  • Mark parallel lines on fabric (at least 5-6 lines)
  • Sew along marked lines starting each row with a few stitches in place, then lengthen stitch length (practice a few rows on a sample first.  Leave a 4 inch tail at the end of each row.
  • Keep fabric straight as you sew each row.
  • Keep an eye on bobbin so you avoid running out of thread in the middle a row. (if you do, you can always tie a knot, just not the best choice)
  • After you've completed your rows steam with iron from the front side.
  • Pull tails through to the back and tie off with a square knot.
  • When possible catch beginning and ending thread tails in a sewn seam.
  • Handwash completed shirred garments to avoid snagging.
